an impassioned defense of the expression of freedom worldwide. mitt romney urged other nations to emulate the free economy and suggested that the obama leadership in the middle east has been inadequate and reactive. this is a short piece to start us off from the president at united nations yesterday, talking about the middle east. [video clip] >> i believe that this message must be rejected by all those who respect our common humanity. i have made it clear that the united states had nothing to do with this video. it is an insult to muslims, and everyone. we are the home to muslims worship across our country. we not only respect the freedom of religion, we have laws that protect individuals from being harmed because of how they look or what they believe. we understand why people take offense to this video because millions of our citizens are among them. host: more headlines following these speeches, "obama talks tough on mideast extremism." "uses addressed to regain the initiative on foreign policy." if you look at the front page of "the washington times" this , the right "the expected cam

. that is the most important thing. the defense of our country really is the most important thing. this president's attitude towards the mideast has caused the whole middle east to be up in flames. everybody can watch on their television. what do they think this is caused by? it is caused by a very weak attitude towards -- these terrorists are irrational. any person that would put a bomb on their children and send them into a restaurant, you're never going to rationalize with them, because they want to go to paradise, to heaven. how anybody can dig their going to talk to him -- he is naive and was never equipped to be president. i was very happy that he got in because he was black and i thought that was a wonderful thing for america, could have a black president, but i really don't understand how anybody can vote him in again. host: let's look at an opinion piece in the wall street journal. other opinions stories today -- we're asking whether you plan to what the presidential debate tomorrow night. in's hear from rachel florida and on our democrat line it. caller: thanks for taking my call. i wou

way is, let's go back to year 2000 defense department levels. we have a very bloated, wasteful military budget that has doubled over the year 2000. are we twice as secure? i do not think so. we can look at the blow back happening across the middle east. you can see having this hyper military is a man these drone wars and pakistan and somalia, which the president began to expand on day 3 and office. there were no republicans to blame it on. he began to expand the war effort massively. it is calling for $600 billion to renovate nuclear weapons and a new modes of delivering them. this is not the direction we need to go. we need a foreign policy based on human rights, not on the procurement of oil resources. we provide for a green a new deal that would directly create jobs. because it creates jobs in the green economy, it allows us to back off these wars for oil and save hundreds of billions of dollars on the bloated military. instead it puts that money into jobs, health care, and education -- the things we need at home to create national security. host: the biggest challenge is ge

that the court has exempted yet for the defense of marriage act. a federal circuit court has felt that that law in one provision is not constitutional. the provision forbids the government from recognizing same-sex marriages. this law was passed before any state performed same-sex marriage. there are 3 or four other states to recognize same-sex marriages starting next year. the question before the court and the one that this record in boston and several district courts is whether it is justifiable for the government to deny benefits to same-sex spouses. those courts found there is a significant justification to target this group. we're talking about survivor benefits. a same-sex spouse dies and is the spouse and tile to death benefits, that kind of thing. there is no justification for the government to substitute its view of marriage for that of a state. the government has always accepted a state's own definition of marriage. host: him from georgia -- kim. caller: i don't think the supreme court can usurp state's rights. they should not always be taken to task by the supreme court. it is a fede

you go to china -- is this the equivalent of us wanting missile defense in poland or having something in another country? guest: i think it is partly the russians do not want to lose their influence and want to be a global player. the other big thing for russia and china, probably the bigger thing, is neither is interested in really promulgating the principle that the international community to -- should have the right to intervene in situations of gross human rights abuses. they agreed to abstain in the case of libya but then they saw and their own mind the western powers take the resolution to protect civilians and turn it in their view for a license for regime change. weather and not gaddafi had been deposed and not, i did not think it would be enthusiastic about a similar intervention in syria because they feel themselves internally vulnerable. they have quite poor human- rights record and there have been times where they have oppressed minorities and other groups in their own country. host: death is an independent in new york. -- beth is an independent in new york. caller: i woul
